What is mammoth ivory?

Mammoth ivory comes from the tusk of the extinct mammoth. It is neither ordinary bone nor an imitation of elephant ivory. This natural dentine has a fine structure, growth lines and varying patterns. Every piece carries its own tone and the marks of time spent underground.

These works are sometimes described as “mammoth bone carvings”. The more precise term is mammoth ivory carving: the material comes from a tusk, not a bone.

Where does Jan Dejmal’s mammoth ivory come from?

The mammoth ivory used in Jan Dejmal’s works comes from Siberia and was acquired in the 1990s. Its authenticity was verified by a laboratory at the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague. How is mammoth ivory carved?

The work starts with the choice of a piece: its size, structure and natural grain influence the detail it can hold. Hand carving gradually removes material, refines the form, then smooths and polishes it. As the material is limited and irreplaceable, every cut matters.

Jan Dejmal does not present mammoth ivory in isolation. In his reliefs, he composes it with wood and, depending on the work, mother of pearl or metal. The pale tusk stands out against the wood’s colour and grain, bringing together an ancient material and a contemporary carver’s hand.

Jan Dejmal began as a furniture restorer and has also made copies of historical bows since 1987. His experience with rare woods and finely scaled work led him towards original reliefs. Mammoth ivory allows him to combine precise carved detail with a material whose history is as distinctive as the finished image.
